Fondé au début de l'année 1939 par Alfred Lion, Francis Wolff et Max Margulis, le label Blue Note lance sa première édition le 3 mars de la même année : un format 12" pour 78 tours de Meade "Lux" Lewis, intitulé Melancholy.
